Description

The poems for A Manchester Magnificat had been commissioned from Audrey Vaughan by the Manchester Cathedral Cantata Choir many years ago. In 1993-4 David Solomons took up the challenge of setting the poems to music and this setting
(for choir, soloists, woodwind, brass, harp and Lancashire clogs (specially provided by a local museum! - alternatively the clogs could be played on woodblocks!))
was performed in 1994 at the Cathdedral.

The audio sample contains three extracts from this performance including the haunting oboe solo at the beginning followed by an evocation of the rural origins of Manchester, the Psalm setting Sing a New Song to the Lord*, and the final big chorus "Magnificat".

The original version was subsequently rearranged for a combination of choir with piano and organ (also incorporating a
small change at the words "drown sound down").
