Description

Anecdote - a metamusical scene for flute by Zoltan Paulinyi (June 2004). A show-piece recorded in June 2008 by Antônio Carrasqueira in Brazil.

Program note:

"We find three old friends in a humble pub.
The first is a "carioca". He knows many women from the neighbourhood, but his real passion is a young girl from the high society, making their love impossible.
The second is a north-east immigrant who wanted to escape from the harshness of his land, but has only found the urban barrenness. Thus he became sensitive to remembrances of nature and birds, particularly the song his wife used to sing while working.
The third is a "mineiro" pretending to be good-humored, but eventually the drink reveals his deep grief for a despised love."

Piece in 3 movements (14 pages) taking about 15 minutes to perform it. Suitable for printing in folio sized paper (21.6 x 33 cm), may be easely scaled to A4 (21 x 29.7 cm).

Instructions in Portuguese are fully translated into English:

On stage, there is a high pub bench, a mug over a little table and a closed bottle of beer (in case of sponsorship, there may be a label on the bottle!). Flute player comes in reading the current newspapers and goes absent-minded to the table. Player notices the audience and gets embarrassed; he puts the newspapers clumsily over the table and starts playing, stood up.

"Uma outra opção: cortina se abre…"
Another option: curtain opens (or lights on) with the flute player already sat down reading the newspapers. Player notices the audience and gets embarrassed; he stands up, puts the newspapers clumsily over the table and starts playing.

Continua a tocar."
Flutist opens the bottle, fills the mug but decides not to taste it yet. He continues playing.

Flutist drinks a little. In case he likes, he may offer it to the audience; otherwise, shows an ugly face. He sits down in another position, in profile. Go on playing.

"Os glissandi são no bocal, não cromáticos"
The glissandi are at the mouthpiece, not chromaticaly.

"Livremente" = freely.

"Como no pífano" = as in the pífano.

Put the music stand back to the original concert place.

Put a straw or farm hat which was under the table (hidden, if possible). Still sat, player starts marking the rhythm, remembering the music.

"Procurar, estabanadamente, a partitura sobre a mesinha."
Carelessly search the score over the table.

Clean and put on stand the score found under the bottle.

"SORRIR e continuar!"
SMILE and continue!

Stand up and continue playing on the flute.

pg. 8: "Fechar a partitura e jogá-la na mesa, impacientemente…"
Close the score and throw it over the table. Play the following by memory.

In case the performer cannot play by memory, he may paste this last page on the music stand!

"FIM: apagam-se as luzes".
The END: lights off.
=================
