Description

Matthiola for String Quartet:

Violin 1
Violin 2
Viola
Violoncello

All four parts of Matthiola begin with a short poem.
The poem is supposed to be read in turn, by the players of the quartet, while the others play pizzicato chords.
After this intro the real quartet begins.

In the preview you can see the second page of Matthiola.
The sound sample fragment gives the beginning of the third piece.
The sound sample is originally a midi-file.
I know the sound of it is far from musical, but I hope it can give you an idea about what kind of music it is.

The duration of Matthiola is a little more than 14 minutes. (all four parts together)

Part 1
'A Purple Summer Night'

Brighy purple the flowers are;
They fill the air with their scent,
In the dimming light of a summer night.
Dark purple our music is,
Deep purple and white.

Part 2
'The Blooming String Quartet'

Matthiola, as sweet as your name you are;
Loved by the butterfly, the dragonfly the bumblebee...
With your four purple petals,
You look like a blooming string quartet to me.

Part 3
'Singing flowers'

When I was a child, I could hear the flowers sing.
What do flowers sing about?
They sing about joy and happiness,
And about the sadness and sorrow,
Each living soul will find on his way.

Part 4
'Gigue in the Night'

Bright purple your flowers are;
They fill the air with your scent,
in the silent darkness of this summer night.
Deep purple our music is,
With flashes of heavenly light.
