Publish the way you want to

December 7, 2007

The internet is quickly becoming the method of choice for publishing music. Analysts predict that by 2010 at least a quarter of all sheet music will be sold online*. Online publishing is gradually replacing retail selling, just as CDs replaced vinyl and cassettes. This development is creating new opportunities for everybody who publishes sheet music.

Internet selling saves costs, it's faster, and customers increasingly demand it. Larger music corporations have recognized this and are rapidly developing websites that allow them to explore new opportunities.

With sheet music being traded online, one no longer needs a retail chain, distribution network, or corporate sales machine, all historically out of reach for the individual. Neither does music require a mass-appeal in order to be commercially interesting. By selling through the internet you can:

1. reach a wider audience more easily;

2. publish worldwide cost-efficiently;

3. maintain control over quality, branding, and copyrights.

Piracy, while still a concern, is becoming less of a threat, provided that the customer perceives value in gaining a legitimate copy. As the market for e-books demonstrates, being able to make an instant, downloadable purchase has far greater appeal than waiting for a copy to arrive by mail. Customers are willing to pay for perceived value.

Internet sales also offer an alternative to illegal copying by ensuring that even the most distant customer can easily find your (legitimate) music by using simple search words on powerful search engines like Google and Yahoo.
